Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana is one of the defining figures of American Pop Art — and among the most collectible artists of the twentieth century. At Conceptually Yours on Walton Street, Chelsea, we have stocked Robert Indiana editions for over a decade, presenting his work to collectors and interior enthusiasts across London and worldwide.

The artist: language as image

Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana in 1928, the artist took his home state as his surname after moving to New York in 1954 — a deliberate act of self-invention that set the tone for everything that followed. After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Edinburgh College of Art, Indiana joined New York's avant-garde scene alongside Ellsworth Kelly and Agnes Martin, developing a visual language rooted in American signage, billboards and commercial logos.

Where his contemporaries explored abstraction or figurative painting, Indiana turned to words. Bold, hard-edged letters in vivid primary colours — EAT, DIE, LOVE, HOPE — delivered immediate emotional impact while concealing layers of social commentary on American identity, consumerism and desire. This deceptively simple approach made his work immediately accessible and enduringly powerful.

LOVE: the most recognised image in contemporary art

Indiana introduced the LOVE motif in 1964, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York commissioned him to design a Christmas card. The stacked four-letter design — its tilted O becoming one of art history's most iconic gestures — went on to appear on a United States postage stamp in 1973, in large-scale public sculptures from New York's Sixth Avenue to Tokyo and London, and in hundreds of editions across print, sculpture and tapestry.

His LOVE sculptures and limited-edition prints have achieved significant results at auction. A Love Red/Blue painted aluminium sculpture fetched over $4 million at Christie's New York, while his prints routinely sell at Sotheby's and Christie's for five figures. According to recent market data, the average auction price for a Robert Indiana print has reached approximately £4,658, with values showing steady growth over recent years.

Why buy Robert Indiana from a London gallery

Buying from an established London gallery on Walton Street — one of Chelsea's premier addresses for art, antiques and design — gives collectors direct access to expert advice, proper documentation and the reassurance of handling works in person before purchase. We are a short walk from South Kensington and Knightsbridge underground stations.

Collecting Robert Indiana: what you need to know

Editions matter. Indiana's prints were issued in editions ranging from small signed runs of 20 to larger unsigned editions of several hundred. Smaller editions from key series — particularly the 1960s and 1970s screenprints — command the highest prices. Always check the edition number and the presence of the artist's signature.

Condition is critical. As with all works on paper, storage history and light exposure affect value significantly. We assess and describe condition carefully for every work we offer.

Authentication. Indiana's estate has actively monitored the market for unauthorised works. All pieces we stock are sourced from documented provenance.

Investment context. Robert Indiana's work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. His place in art history is established. For collectors, his prints represent an accessible entry point into a blue-chip Pop Art name — works that hold their value and bring genuine visual pleasure to any interior.
