Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami is one of the most sought-after and collectible contemporary artists in the world. Often described as the Andy Warhol of Japan, his work has redefined the boundaries between fine art, popular culture and commercial design — and his prints are among the most actively traded on the secondary market today. At Conceptually Yours on Walton Street, Chelsea, we have long championed Murakami's work, bringing his iconic editions to collectors in London and worldwide.

The artist: Superflat and the art of everything

Born in Tokyo in 1962, Takashi Murakami studied traditional Japanese painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts before moving to New York on a Rockefeller Foundation grant in 1992. The experience transformed him. Returning to Japan, he developed what he called the Superflat aesthetic — a theory and visual style that collapsed the distinction between high art and the flat, two-dimensional world of manga, anime and consumer advertising.

In 1995 he founded the Kaikai Kiki studio — a production collective that operates less like a traditional artist's studio and more like a creative factory, producing paintings, prints, sculptures, merchandise and fashion collaborations at extraordinary scale. His most recognisable characters — the smiling flower, Mr. DOB, Kaikai and Kiki — emerged from this period and have since become global icons.

Murakami has collaborated with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Billie Eilish, Louis Vuitton and Google. In 2010 a major retrospective of his work was held at the Château de Versailles. He is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim, and major institutions across Europe and Asia. His influence on contemporary visual culture is difficult to overstate.

Murakami's print market: what collectors need to know

Murakami's prints are among the most commercially active in the contemporary art market. According to Artprice data, his print market has grown from approximately £480,000 in turnover in 2015 to over £1.25 million in 2024 — a 160% increase that reflects his rising global prominence. His prints account for 84% of his work sold at auction, with most reaching prices between £1,000 and £5,000, and significant works regularly exceeding that range.

His most coveted print series include:

  • The Flower series — Murakami's smiling flowers first appeared in 1995 and have become his most iconic motif. Flower Ball screenprints have achieved over £22,000 at Sotheby's, while signed Flower editions remain among his most popular entry-level works for new collectors
  • Mr. DOB — his sharp-toothed alter ego appears across paintings, prints and sculptures. Signed DOB screenprints have sold for over £23,000 at Phillips, with smaller editions more accessible for first-time buyers
  • Louis Vuitton collaborations — Murakami began working with Louis Vuitton in 2002, and prints featuring the LV monogram are consistently strong performers; one set of five screenprints sold for over £36,000 at Phillips in 2021
  • And Then (Superflat Method) — the celebrated flower face series in varied colourways, published by Kaikai Kiki in limited editions and widely regarded as one of his most collectable print series

At the very top of the market, his major paintings and sculptures are museum-scale: My Lonesome Cowboy sold for US$15.1 million at Sotheby's in 2008, and Dragon in Clouds – Red Mutation fetched over £6.4 million in Shanghai in 2018. Signed prints offer collectors genuine access to one of the defining artists of our era at a fraction of those prices.

Why buy Murakami from a London gallery

Purchasing from an established gallery gives you access to authenticated works, proper paperwork and expert guidance — essential when buying in a market that attracts a significant number of unauthorised reproductions. Kaikai Kiki Co. publishes Murakami's authorised editions directly; anything outside that provenance chain should be approached with caution.

Conceptually Yours has been operating on Walton Street, one of Chelsea's most prestigious addresses, for over a decade. We are conveniently located between Knightsbridge and South Kensington underground stations, and our online shop is open 24 hours a day with worldwide shipping.

Collecting Murakami: practical advice

Signatures matter. Murakami typically signs in silver or gold pen — distinctive and easily verified. Unsigned open editions exist but command significantly lower prices than hand-signed, numbered works.

Edition size is critical. Smaller editions — runs of 30, 50 or 100 — hold value better than larger open editions of several hundred. Always confirm the total edition size when purchasing.

Published by Kaikai Kiki. All authorised Murakami prints are published and distributed by his own Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. studio. This provenance should be documentable for any serious work.

Condition and storage. As with all works on paper, avoid direct sunlight and humidity. Museum-quality framing with UV-protective glass is strongly recommended — we offer this as part of our custom framing service.

Cultural relevance. Murakami's commercial collaborations — Louis Vuitton, Supreme, Uniqlo, Kanye West, Billie Eilish — have introduced his work to successive generations of new collectors. Demand shows no sign of abating, and his position as the leading Japanese artist of the contemporary era is firmly established.
